What is osu! catch?
osu! catch — also called Catch the Beat (CTB) — is osu!'s catching mode. Fruit falls from the top of the screen, and you move a catcher left and right along the bottom to catch it in time with the music.
How osu! catch is played
You move with two keys (left and right) and hold a dash key to move faster. A map is really a path: where the fruit lands decides how far, and how fast, you have to move.
- Fruits — the main objects; missing one breaks your combo.
- Juice streams — lines of droplets that follow a path; the big fruits along them count for combo.
- Banana showers — bonus bananas raining down for extra score.
- Dashes and hyperdashes — dash for long movements; a fruit that glows red gives you a hyperdash, a burst of speed for jumps too far to dash.
What's in an osu! catch beatmap
Each difficulty is a plain-text .osu file containing:
- Hit objects — every fruit, juice stream and banana shower with its time and horizontal position (the vertical position doesn't matter in catch).
- Circle size — in osu! catch it sets the size of the catcher and the fruit, so it changes how precisely you must move.
- Timing points — red (uninherited) lines set the BPM and offset, so every object sits on the beat; green (inherited) lines change scroll speed or hitsound volume for a section.
- Difficulty settings — HP drain, overall difficulty (how strict the timing judgement is) and the mode's own settings.
- Metadata — title, artist, the mapper's name, the difficulty name and tags.
- The .osz file — a mapset is shared as one .osz: a zip archive with every difficulty's .osu file, the song and the background image. Opening it (or dragging it onto the game window) imports the whole set.
Difficulty and star rating
osu! calculates a star rating (★) for every difficulty mainly from movement: how far and how often you have to change direction, and how many dashes and hyperdashes the map asks for.
osu! catch on DanceGAI
CatchGAI, DanceGAI's model for osu! catch, is planned and not available yet — there is no release date. A catch generator has to plan movement that follows the music's energy without becoming impossible to reach.
Today DanceGAI creates osu! mania maps with ManiaGAI and osu! standard maps with OsuGAI (beta). If you also play one of those, you can turn the same song into a playable mapset now.

Can DanceGAI create osu! catch maps?
Not yet. CatchGAI is planned; today DanceGAI creates osu! mania maps (4K–9K) and osu! standard maps (beta).
Can I play osu! standard maps in osu! catch?
Yes — osu! converts osu! standard maps to osu! catch automatically. Maps made for osu! catch are designed around movement and hyperdashes.
